Pistol & Rifle Range Rules

Range rules update: Please check the calendar of events for upcoming events that may effect the range or range closures. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Three Rivers Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, Inc. operates its Ranges for the safe enjoyment of target shooting by its members. The Range Safety Committee, its range officers under the direction of the Chapter President, and the Board of Directors responsible for the safe operation of the ranges.

 

  1. Range hours are 9:00AM to 7:00PM daily. In the winter months 9:00AM till sunset. Other planned activities on the grounds may necessitate occasional range closures .Please check IZAAK calendar for any range closures. A range officer or board member may determine to close the ranges at any time for safety reasons, at such times as may be necessary and will give as much notice as is practical in the circumstances. Such notice may be limited to the posting of a written notice at the range of verbal directions. Compliance with any such notice is mandatory and non-compliance may result in temporary of permanent loss of range privileges.
  2. Safety is ultimate priority. A Range Officer is in charge of safety enforcement and may eject a shooter from the range for cause if he/she is not a member or feels that the individual has created an unsafe condition on the range and refuses to abide by the officers request to correct the problem. No fully automatic weapons allowed. Guns should not be taken from their cases unless within a safe shooting location. Keep all guns unloaded, pointed in a safe direction down range and finger off the trigger until time to shoot. Ear and Eye protection must be worn by everyone in and near the shooting range .However, do not wear hearing protection when going forward of the shooting line. It is the shooter’s responsibility to be aware of and adhere to all posted safety signs and these rules. Whenever a firearm is loaded, it will not be left unattended.
  3. Target holders are furnished by IZAAK Walton League. You may choose to use your own holders if you wish. No shooting of object in the trees, on the ground or in or on the water. No cross-range shooting or shooting over the berm. Allowed. State and Federal laws apply to our league property.
  4. The pistol, rifle and trap range is for members only, over the age of 21.A spouse of a member may shoot if they have a family membership together. A family membership is defined as a member and spouse living at the same address. Children of members under 18 years of age are not eligible to shoot any firearms on the IZAAK Walton property unless they are supervised by a parent, or are a class participant during one of our age appropriate supervised workshops. Anyone between the ages of 18-21 except veterans of the armed services must be supervised by a parent or range officer. If any individuals is between 18 and 21 and wants to shoot on a regular basis he or she must purchase a student or adult membership. (see membership guidelines). All other under age non shooting individuals are not allowed on the range and must not advance beyond the shooting range parking lot. Members may be asked to present their membership cards at the range.
  5. If you encounter a dangerous situation or vandalism, exit, and call a board member. Descriptions, license numbers, etc. are valuable. Members range privileges are subject to cancellation for rule violations, unsuitable behavior or safety incidents. Reimbursement will be sought for any willful damage.
  6. Persons other than the shooter must remain back of the bench until it is their turn to shoot. Spectators must be behind the boundary markers of the parking lot. No horse play, drugs or alcohol or persons under the influence are allowed at the range. Parents are expected to supervise their under age children at all times. Holstered and/or concealed weapons are not allowed outside the pistol range and on the grounds except by individuals possessing a valid Iowa permit t carry and by law enforcement officers. Armor piercing, incendiary, tracer, chemical and explosive projectiles, or devices designed t fire or propel explosive, incendiary or chemical projectiles are prohibited.
  7. Range etiquette: “If you brought it in, take it out.” Police your brass, shells, cans, etc. No vehicles to be driven on private property west of Range parking lot.

 

Trap Range Rules

 

  1. If the pistol or rifle range is in use, the trap ranges can be used as is normally open to all members 1: 00 PM to 5:00 PM daily and 9:00 AM to 5:00PM on Saturday and Sunday. Other planned activities on the grounds may necessitate occasional range closures. Either an officer of the board of directors or a member of the shooting range committee may determine to close the ranges at any time for safety reasons, at such times as may be necessary and will give as much notice as is practical in the circumstances. Such notice may be limited to the posting of a written notice at the range or verbal directions. Compliance with any such notice is mandatory and non-compliance may result in temporary or permanent loss of range privileges. There may be special shoots throughout the year. These events will be posted well in advance of the event. During any shoot, all persons, other than the participants (shooters, trap operators, score keepers, pull stand operators, etc. are to remain well behind the shooting lines or stations. No hand traps will be used when a trap field is in operation. When not in use, all guns are to be placed in the provided gun racks with actions open. Members and spectators shall not handle guns during the shoot unless they are on a shooting station or in route to a shooting station. Treat every gun as if it were loaded. All guns are to be handled with the action open, unless you are at a shooting station. Remember the three safety rules. Point the gun in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger, and make sure the gun is unloaded.
  2. After any shoot the participants are to pick up all empty shells and remove them from the premises. Return all live or defective shells to you vehicle. When a squad of shooters is on the shooting station the following will be observed: a. Do not place a shell in a gun until it is your turn to shoot and you are in position at the shooting station. B. Never place more than one shell in a gun during trap shooting. c. Always keep your muzzle pointed away from other shooters when leaving the shooting station and the action must be open with muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Hearing and sight protection is mandatory for shooters, trap operators, score keepers, and spectators.
  3. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited on any of the premises.
  4. Shotguns with shot of 71/2,8,9, only are allowed on the shotgun range. Shotgun slugs are allowed on the fifty or 100 yard rifle range only. The shotgun range is operated by members that are pre-qualified shooters. There is a Gun Safety training class once a year. The date for this class will be posted on the bulletin board and event calendar. This class is required to be able to operate the range on your own.
